A rainbow is always a welcome sight, even more so if it follows a particularly ferocious storm. In the same way, a child born following the loss of an earlier baby, be it from miscarriage, still birth or neonatal death, is identified as a Rainbow Baby. A really helpful article about rainbow babies can be found here on the Kicks Count website.
Those parents who come to the studio with a Rainbow Baby often want to honour the angel baby, and scour the shops for a rainbow themed item such as a blanket. I wanted to remove this stress from the process of coming for a photosession by providing a prop that would be timeless, like my photography.
I sought the expertise of local creative Christie Fogden, who already provides my tutus for Sitting Up Sessions. Christie has been mastering the art of needle felting since February 2017 and her company "Woolly Pebbles" creates gorgeously chunky felted shapes that she designs herself. I commissioned her to make a cream heart with a rainbow across it; a beautiful and effective way to incorporate a rainbow into a Maternity Session, Newborn Experience or Sitting Up Session. Her own daughters are Rainbow Babies, so this project was poignant for her.
"I loved making this rainbow heart as I think the cream contrasts so beautifully with the bright colours of the rainbow. Working with the wool so comforting and relaxing as it’s very tactile. I also imagined all the babies who would be photographed with it."
If you are visiting the studio with a Rainbow Baby, simply ask for the Rainbow Heart to be used in the images. If you would like Christie to commission a Woolly Pebble for you, she can be contacted via her Woolly Pebbles Facebook page.
"I can highly recommend BabyPhotography.co.uk, it was such a special experience. Heather is so friendly and professional. I felt pampered and at ease during my baby bump photo shoot. I am so pleased with the photos, she’s captured us all beautifully. Thank you."
